A sunny weekend in the Snoqualmie Valley accompanied by loud sirens usually leads locals to fear the worst for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts who flock to the area for the mountains, trails and the river.
Sunday, June 8, 2014, was another one of those sunny, warm days when North Bend residents reported hearing multiple sirens and seeing police, fire and search and rescue vehicles respond to the Little Si trailhead around 12:30PM. Luckily, Sunday’s sirens ended with good news.
King County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant, Cindi West, said a 32-year old man was climbing with a friend in the Little Si area of North Bend when he fell. West stated the friends were using ropes and other “mechanical gear” and that there may have been an equipment malfunction.
The climber lost consciousness after the fall, which triggered a fast response from emergency and search and rescue crews. When crews reached the injured man he had regained consciousness and was alert.
The climber was packed down from Little Si by search and rescue teams and was transported to Harborview Medical Center in moderate condition. Sergeant West said the he is expected to survive.
According to Washington Trail Association, rock climbers use the first half of the trail to access the rock faces on the east end of Little Si, the summit of which is nearly 1,600 feet.
