Longtime Snoqualmie business, Down to Earth Flowers and Gifts, recently relocated to the historic Sherman Building – right in the center of Snoqulamie’s revitalized historic business core – on Railroad Ave. This marks the first business to set up shop in the historic business district since the city completed its revitalization project this past November. Owner, Maggi Whitaker, says flooding was the major factor when deciding to relocate to her new spot. The revitalized street-scape is just an added bonus.
Down to Earth Flowers and Gifts, Snoqualmie’s only florist, began in 2000 in the small storefront that is now Koko Beans Coffee Shop. As the business grew, Maggi knew she needed a bigger spot to meet demand. In 2005 she relocated to Newton Ave, enlarged the floral cooler and continued to expand the business – becoming a long-standing business in downtown Snoqualmie. She says the recent move was prompted by flooding issues at her previous location. She wanted the business on higher ground – and wanted to stay in historic Snoqualmie.
One glance at the new location makes you think Maggi made a great decision. The early 1900’s Sherman Building, with its historic charm and large front
windows, lends itself to the curb appeal of the florist/specialty gift shop. The shop’s interior is warm and light-filled. Maggi also incorporated the back side of the business with the revitalized Falls Ave area – capitalizing on the newly added parking spots. If you park and enter Down to Earth from Falls Ave, you are greeting by a cobblestone courtyard and canopy of a nearly 100 year old walnut tree. Maggi caters this side of the building to her wedding customers. There is a charming, comfortable room for wedding floral design and planning. She may add seating to the courtyard during the warm summer months as well – possibly serving beverages.
All and all Down to Earth is a breath of fresh air to the spruced up downtown business district. It seems a good fit – like Maggi’s shop has always been there. Next time you are downtown, slow down and take a look at the cute floral shop that might be another anchor for the downtown business core. This writer feels it’s worth a look.
