Coach Charlie Kinnune’s Mount Si Football team made some history this fall when in only its second season in the very competitive 4A KingCo Conference, the Wildcats clinched a playoff spot. But, that wasn’t the end of the historical milestones.
Off they headed last Friday night, November 6th, to Federal Way to face Thomas Jefferson High School – and they pulled off the away team upset, hanging on to win a tight 17-14 game.
The defense played tough and held off Thomas Jefferson throughout the second half, with freshman kicker Reed Paradissis knocking in a 40-yard field goal mid-way through the 4th quarter – a kick that proved to be the difference in the game.
The victory puts Mount Si into the State 4A Round of 16 for the first time ever, with a tough opponent on tap, Saturday, November 14th at 1PM – in another game that puts the team on the road to the south end.
This time they travel all the way to Bethel High School’s Art Crate Stadium to face the Graham Kapowsin Eagles. The undefeated Eagles won the 4A South Puget Sound Conference this season.
Coming out of the tough KingCo Conference may hold some advantages this playoff season for 7-3 Mount Si. Currently four of the remaining 16 teams in state 4A playoffs hail from the KingCo Conference. That tougher competition may give the team the edge it needs to pull off another road victory and move on to the state quarter finals – and a shot at returning to the Tacoma Dome for the 4A State Championship.
AND… if both Mount Si and Issaquah knock off their opponents this week, it will set up an Eastside matchup next weekend. AND… possibly set up more history in the making.
