Mount Si High School names new assistant principal; first outside-district leadership hire in years

Mount Si High School announced on April 3, 2017, that it had hired a new Assistant Principal. The hire marks the first time since John Belcher was chosen to head the school in 2011 that a MSHS principalship position was filled from outside the Snoqualmie Valley School District.

Sana Tariq will join Mount Si High School from the Seattle School District where she is currently an assistant principal at Washington Middle School. Before that she worked for four years at Issaquah’s Pine Lake Middle School as a Positive Behavior and Social Emotional Support Coach.

Principal Belcher said via email, “I am pleased to announce that Sana Tariq has been hired as an assistant principal for Mount Si High School. Starting July 1, she will join the school’s leadership team with administrative responsibilities focused on supervising the Math and Special Education departments, as well as providing professional development for staff.”

Ms. Tariq will replace Rhonda Schmidt who is leaving to become the principal at Two Rivers School next year.

Mount Si High School stated it was looking for a leader who was “highly effective at improving teaching and learning, and focused on the growth of students and staff.”

The announcement email said, “Throughout the interview process, Ms. Tariq demonstrated energy and passion to help Mount Si continue its pursuit of being one of the best high schools in the state.”

Ms. Tariq has a background in Mathematics, Special Education, and leadership, with an emphasis on restorative justice practices and social emotional support.

In the Seattle School district she supervised the Math, Special Education, and English as a Second Language (ESL) departments at Washington Middle School, and helped guide school-wide implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) practices. At Pine Lake Middle School her entailed training all staff on positive classroom management strategies and trauma-informed student interventions.

Ms. Tariq has also been a Special Education teacher and Special Education department chair at Pine Lake Middle School, She earned her Principal Certification and Program Director Certification from City University of Seattle and a Master of Education degree in Curriculum Design and Educational Technology from Concordia University in Portland. She also has a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, with a minor in Special Education, from City University in Seattle and is multi-lingual, speaking English,  Urdu and Hindi

The Snoqualmie Valley School Board will officially approve her appointment at the April 4th School Board meeting.
