The Mount Si High School National Honor Society, the largest club at Mount Si, recently completed its second annual Spring Service Project in partnership with the City of Snoqualmie.
About 250 NHS members, including sophomores, juniors and seniors, volunteered their time on four separate weekend dates earlier this month to help beautify some City of Snoqualmie parks and trails.
They grabbed tools, threw on gardening gloves and went to work. Projects they completed include:
- Restored a 1/4 acre lot with 90 native shrubs and trees.
- Mulched about 100 trees at Centennial fields.
- Installed 20 tree guards at Centennial Fields.
- Mulched a trail, the bike park, and dug out silt fence at Fisher Creek Park.
- Weeded beds and cleared the gravel path at Ironwood Park.
- Removed Butterfly bush and blackberry from the Kinsey-Fairway trail.
- Planted and mulched the Iris Pond landscape bed at Community Park.
Each NHS members put two volunteer hours, which amounted 500 total hours of direct community service from Mount Si High School students.
MSHS National Honor Society President, Baly Botten said, “The feedback we have received from the students is that they greatly enjoyed working in a fun, safe, and motivational environment where they felt they were directly impacting their community.”
Baly added that not only did the projects benefit the parks, but also gave students “a sense of ownership in their community,” something he hopes will help decrease the amount of vandalism at local parks.
The City of Snoqualmie Public Works Department helped facilitate this NHS Community Service Project. City employees worked alongside students at each site to help organize, explain and assist, which included providing tools, equipment, materials and even snacks.
Next up Baly says members will be working in North Bend to clean up a couple of roundabouts – AND freshmen who are interested in joining NHS next year will be cleaning up the school grounds at Mount Si High School’s Main and Freshman Campus on May 27th.
Current MSHS freshman interested in joining National Honor Society can find more info at mountsinhs.weebly.com under the Prospective Members menu tab.
Nice Job students!
