At the May 3, 2022, North Bend City Council meeting, Council unanimously approved a resolution accepting construction bids for the North Bend Train Depot Roof Rehabilitation project, awarding the construction contract to AMER-X Inc.
The 35-year-old roof is weathered and in need of replacement. In 2021, the City was awarded $150,000 in grant funds from the Washington State Department of Commerce (DOC) for the project. There is no match requirement for this grant.
Located at William H. Taylor Park, the Train Depot was built in 1987. Over the years, the depot has served the community in a variety of ways, both as a source of tourism that supports visitors and locals via Northwest Railway Museum train rides, as a location for town halls, a visitor information center, a recreation program location for Valley children and more.
Mayor Rob McFarland commented, “The Train Depot and Taylor Park are an integral part of our downtown, and part of what makes it so unique. This rehab project is a positive step towards achieving our goal in creating an ideal downtown location for spacious, safe gatherings.”
AMER-X Inc.’s work on the Train Depot Roof Rehabilitation project will include:
- Removing the existing concrete tile roof
- Replacing underlayment and facia as necessary
- Replacing some select beams
- Installing new gutters and downspouts
- Installing a new standing seam metal roof

A few things. First, why aren’t more local companies chosen for contracts? (Especially when it’s a grant.) Do you ask local companies to bid? Second, please tell me you didn’t accept a bid for the entire grant. $150K could re-roof our home 15 times over. (Granted it’s not metal, you get the point.) Lastly, how is the City vetting these businesses? This company does business by another name. Very little insight on the website. Not BBB accredited. Referrals? Bush Prairie isn’t even close to North Bend, nor are they licensed with the City. L&I says they reported 1-3 employees, so I hope the City isn’t planning on getting the job done fast!
