Don’t get me wrong, bunnies are cute. Baby bunnies are even cuter, but they are overtaking my yard – and I can’t stop them.
I spray repellent and it rains. I’ve tried it all – putrified eggs, cayenne pepper, something else the lady at Carmichael’s recommended but I can’t remember the name. But as fast as I try new methods to stop them from eating all my plants, they multiply – breed with each other.
And now to add insult to injury, they are not scared of me anymore. They used to hear us and run. Now they just glance our way (and I swear smile) and continue chowing down the plants; plants that due to a late summer have taken forever to bloom; plants that now have an interesting manicured shape from the bottom up.
It seems they even have a way to get to the blooms on the taller plants; blooms out of their reach. They chew the stalk down at the base (like a bunny mouth ax) and once it falls, reap the rewards of their hard work. I know they do this because they look at me while destroying my tall plants and in bunny language snicker, calling me a sucker. I think they actually enjoy the audience.
If you don’t believe me, check out the video I took while working in the yard today. Three baby bunnies laying in the sun while I filmed them at close distance. And to think, I was just preparing to spray a cayenne pepper and water mixture. Like it would actually help!

If you don’t have a dog, borrow one. My pups chase the bunnies but don’t hurt them. The bunnies don’t like my dogs.
Cute! Maybe all the bears will eat them.
I buy a bag of carrots just for the bunnies!! They leave everything else alone and just eat the carrots!!
We do get the occasional few bunnies at the peak of baby bunny season. Most of them get picked off buy the hawks and owls. Have you tried maybe putting up a fake owl, or trapping the bunnies?
Great story. My neighbors and I were just saying the samething. We must have 4 bunnies living on our street. They just hop from yard to yard. I’m looking for a solution too. Maybe wild life will balance out the population????
We have rabbits in the yard this year for the first time since we moved here in 2005. One of the babies was seen dangling (dead) from the mouth of a neighbor cat a couple of weeks ago. And we also had a coyote pretty close to the house last week, looking for bunnies I’m sure. Without the balance of predators, they will get out of control. Good luck!
