VIDEO | Watch progress on Mount Si High School rebuild, construction update

Wondering about progress on the rebuild of Mount Si High School?  In October, the Snoqualmie Valley School District launched a video program to keep the community updated.

With the help of MSHS Digital Media Academy students and teacher Joe Dockery, the district will release periodic videos to track the progress of the multiple-year, $200 million dollar project that will completely rebuild and expand Mount Si High School on its current site.

“Phase 0” (underway now) relocated the large portable pod, removed the baseball and softball fields – and will soon also remove the front parking lot. The field area has already been graded and gravel installed. Later this month the same process will occur in front the parking lot.  That whole area will then become the home to the rebuilt 355,000 sq. ft, 2,300 student capactiy school.

A large temporary parking lot is currently being created on the rear of school, where buses will load and unload and students will park. Mount Si will not lose any dedicated parking stalls during the multiple-uyear construction period.

Once the new temporary parking lot is ready, the main entrance will be relocated to the rear of the school. Once the front lot is removed and graded, the future site of the new school will undergo a process designed to stabilize the silty soil and meet strict earthquake code for the new facility.

In November/December, a 200-ton construction crane will drill nearly 5,000 three-foot diameter holes, each 50 feet deep. As the drill retracts it leaves the hole filled with gravel to create the ‘stone column’ foundational system that will stabilize the site’s silty soil for construction of the new four-story high building (i.e. raised three-story building with parking underneath to meet flood code).

With ground stabilization is complete, construction on the building is expected to begin on time –  in April 2017, with a majority of the school finished in fall 2019. The last project components – the performing arts center, permanent parking lot, and relocated ball fields – are expected to be done in August 2020.

The project is funded by the voter approved, $244 million school bond. It passed in February 2015.
