WSDOT says I-90 Overpass Girder Needs Replacing, Seeks $1.2 Million in Repairs Costs from Responsible Garbage Company’s Insurer

It was a crazy traffic day in Issaquah when an over-height garbage truck struck and punched a large hole in the Front Street I-90 overpass on March 13th.

One month after that large-scale “WHOOPS” and after a thorough examination, WSDOT bridge engineers decided the damaged girder needs replacing, which will come with a hefty price tag.

WSDOT Asst. Regional Administrator Dave McCormick said the repair will cost $1.2 million and construction would begin later this year.

WSDOT is attempting to recover the $1.2 million from the garbage company’s insurance provider. In the meantime, WSDOT is seeking emergency federal funds to move forward with the replacement work.

Until the fix is made, large trucks traveling eastbound on I-90 are asked to use the left two lanes as a safety precaution and the right shoulder that runs over the damaged girder of the overpass will remain closed.
